Tread Lightly

Yesterday on Thursday 14th of September we had a Tread lightly session, we met two ladies called Sarah and Kalci. They put us in groups of 5 or 6 and we did activities that taught us that our actions can affect our world. We were rotating groups and the first place I went to was the energy one. It had an exercise bike  and there was a multi-plug outlet, there were some things plugged onto it as well such as a hairdryer, a lamp and a sander. When we tried pedalling on the exercise bike the items started working and it was so cool.

The next activity we went to was the caravan, there was a computer and we had to answer some questions about the way we live and it would tell us how many worlds we would need if everyone everyone lived the way you lived. Like if you dry your clothes in a dryer or on a clothing rack, or if you use solar power and not electricity. Our next activity in the caravan was looking at bees  through a microscope. We looked at their eyes, their stingers and their fur. The lady Kalci told us that bees do not have 2 stingers they only have one and they use it to protect themselves. When they use that one stinger they die.

Our next activity was the sewer activity. Sarah gave us all bottles that contained storm water, engine oil, pieces of rubbish, paint, dirt and soapy water. She gave us little notes that said our bottle and mine was engine oil and she told us to put it on the map of a dirty city. She then told us to put it on the clean side of the map and how to prevent those liquids from getting into the drain.

Our last activity was teaching us how to compost and where to put our rubbish. did you know that they dig a big hole in the ground and bury the rubbish? It’s very sad because when they do that the electronics poison the soil and grass stops growing. The government is still finding a solution where the rubbish can be separated from the electronics. Before putting your hard plastic stuff like yogurt bottle and milk cartons rinse them and take the labels off .
